DBT Implementation Plan
1. Goal Setting
Primary Goal: Identify the focus area (e.g., emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness).
Secondary Goals: Improve coping mechanisms, enhance mindfulness, and stabilize emotional responses.
2. Participant Identification
- Determine if the participants are individuals with:
- Diagnosed conditions (e.g., Borderline Personality Disorder, PTSD, Anxiety, etc.).
- Intense emotions, challenging situations, or relationship struggles.
3. Structure Design
Incorporate the four DBT modules:
1. Mindfulness: Teach present-moment awareness and non-judgmental observation of thoughts.
2. Emotion Regulation: Develop techniques to manage and reduce emotional intensity.
3. Distress Tolerance: Build skills to cope with crises without impulsive actions.
4. Interpersonal Effectiveness: Enhance communication and assertiveness skills.
4. Therapy Modalities
- Individual Sessions: Weekly one-on-one therapy to personalize strategies and track progress.
- Group Skills Training: Weekly sessions (2 hours) to practice and learn DBT skills collaboratively.
- Phone Coaching: On-demand support to apply DBT techniques in real-time challenges.
- Diary Cards: These are tools for participants to track their emotions, behaviours, and progress daily.
5. Treatment Stages
- Stage 1: Stabilize life-threatening behaviours and crises.
- Stage 2: Address emotional instability and reduce distress.
- Stage 3: Build self-management and decision-making skills.
- Stage 4: Foster healthy relationships and life satisfaction.
6. Materials and Resources
- Develop worksheets, roleplay scenarios, and mindfulness exercises.
- Provide access to resources for continued learning (books, apps, online modules).
7. Measurement and Feedback
- Track progress through regular assessments (e.g., reductions in self-harm, improved emotional control).
- Collect feedback from participants to adjust techniques and approaches.
- Emphasize the dialectical approach: balancing acceptance and change.
9. Evaluation
- Conduct pre- and post-treatment evaluations.- Use validated tools to measure outcomes (e.g., improvements in emotional regulation and relationship quality).
