Relationship counselling FAQs
Do I have to be referred to D&A?
No. Many organisations and GPs refer people to Talk-sPace, but you can contact us directly if you would like to discuss anything related to relationships.
Is counselling open to everyone?
Our counselling service is open to all who seek help with their relationships, and we welcome everybody over the age of 16.
How can counselling help me?
Counselling helps you take time out from your situation and see it from a fresh perspective. Working with a counsellor gives you, or you and your partner, a chance to think about what you can do to improve your situation. It can also allow you to explore complex or challenging issues in a safe and confidential environment.
Is D&A relationship counselling confidential?
D&A counselling is completely confidential. We will not give your name or any information about you to anyone outside D&A unless someone's safety is at risk.
Do D&A counsellors have special training?
D&A counsellors have all received special training in relationship counselling. It takes up to three years to become a fully qualified Talk-Space counsellor.
As an organisational member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), we are bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy, the Ethical Guidelines for Researching Counselling and Psychotherapy (where organisations undertake research) and subject to the Professional Conduct Procedure for the time being in force.
Will I have to pay a fee?
All our counsellors are highly trained professionals. The initial session is free, and all future sessions are £75.
How do I get an appointment?
The waiting list if a counsellor isn't available yet.
Our Appointments Service is available Monday – Wednesday - Friday (9-30am–5 pm).
How long will I have to wait?
Sessions will be handled directly by your counsellor.
Where do I go for my counselling sessions?
Counselling sessions usually take place online, at the therapist's office or at an agreed venue.
Can I come on my own?
Yes. You will be welcomed either on your own or with your partner.
How long is the counselling process?
This depends entirely on your individual needs. As agreed with your counsellor, you will be given a regular weekly appointment that is yours for as long as you need it.
How long is a counselling session?
Sessions usually last for fifty minutes.
Can we bring children with us?
No. Unfortunately, if you bring your children, you must leave and arrange to re-book your session.
What do I do if I am unhappy about the counselling I receive?
We welcome your comments about your experience with Talk-Space. When the counselling ends, you will be emailed a link to a short survey where you can leave your comments. However, if you are unhappy with any aspect of our service, please tell us.
